POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION TITLE:  Special Education Teacher
Lower Elementary Self-Contained Cross-Categorical
 

REPORTS TO:         Special Education Director and Building Principal
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate   
  • Endorsement in Special Education – SA
  • Must meet or exceed requirements specified with NCA Standards for Accreditation and No Child Left Behind
  • Must meet or exceed requirements for Highly Qualified
  • Demonstrates considerable knowledge of special education rules, guidelines and procedures
  • Demonstrates professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with all students, parents and school personnel
  • Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and management skills
  • Demonstrates strong consultation skills for supporting special education skills in inclusive settings
  • Demonstrates expertise in collaborative teaching to support special education students in inclusive settings

  
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide specialized and individualized educational instruction to students in self-contained program using a functional academic curriculum
  • Manage student behaviors and maximize student engagement/achievement
  • Facilitate open, continuous communication with general education staff and administrators
  • Develop, coordinate and conduct REEDs, METs, IEPs, FBA/BIPs and Transition Plans for student
  • Administer and translate comprehensive achievement testing for annual and three-year reevaluations with a variety of assessments including, but not limited to: WRAT, Woodcock-Johnson III
  • Coordinate programs and services within school district and external agencies as needed

 

 

  • Maintain accurate and complete records, according to district policies/procedures and IDEA law
  • Develop and implement Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavioral Intervention Plans
  • Attend all Special Education and building staff meetings and professional development
  • Participate in building and/or district committees
  • Contribute to the evaluation process for classroom paraprofessionals
  • Adhere to policies of the Westwood Community Board of Education
  • Participate in building and/or district committees
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Special Education Director or Building Principal

 
Physical/Mental Demands and Work Hazards

Physical demands while performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations. 
 
Terms of Employment

  • Ten-month school year
  • Salary to be according to the current contact with Wayne County MEA/NEA
