POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

 

Position:        Special Education Teacher Consultant/Resource Room

Classroom Teacher

 

Location:       Thorne Elementary School

 

Reports To:   Director of Special Education & Student Services,

                        Building Principal

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
  2. Endorsement in Special Education – SA, SE, SM, or SV.
  3. Teacher Consultant Approval – current or eligible.
  4. Ability to support high school curriculum, including Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry.
  5. Must meet or exceed State requirements.
  6. Must meet or exceed requirements for Highly Qualified.
  7. Demonstrates considerable knowledge of special education rules, guidelines and procedures.
  8. Demonstrates professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with all students, parents and school Personnel.
  9. Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills.
  10. Demonstrates strong organizational and management skills.
  11. Demonstrates strong consultation skills for supporting special education skills in inclusive settings.
  12. Demonstrates expertise in collaborative teaching to support special education students in inclusive settings.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide consultative support to the general education teachers through routinely scheduled consultation related to the progress of identified students in the resource room and general education classes.
  2. Manage student behaviors and maximize student engagement/achievement.
  3. Facilitate open, continuous communication with general education staff, administrators and parents.
  4. Develop, coordinate and conduct REEDs, METs, IEPs, FBA/BIPs, MDRs and Transition Plans.
  5. Administer and translate comprehensive achievement testing for annual and three-year reevaluations with a variety of assessments including, but not limited to: WRAT, Woodcock-Johnson III.
  6. Maintain accurate and complete records, according to district policies/procedures and IDEA law.
  7. Develop and implement Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavioral Intervention Plans.
  8. Attend all Special Education and building staff meetings and professional development.
  9. Adhere to policies of the Westwood Community Board of Education.
  10. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Special Education Director or Building Principal.

 

 

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Deep understanding of multi-disciplinary project-based learning and experienced in engaging students in hands-on learning while maintaining academic rigor.
  2. Skilled in interdisciplinary planning, collaborates with colleagues, and demonstrates ability to work well with a wide range of constituents (colleagues, parents, students, board members, etc.).
  3. Able to lead diverse learners and well-versed in instructional strategies for serving students of different skill levels in the same classroom.
  4. Deep understanding of data-driven decision making and formative assessment used to plan and modify instructional practices.
  5. Experienced in integrating technology into their teaching and can support student learning using technology.

This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations.
