Position Details: 

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a year round, 37.5 hours a week, non-union, at-will position reporting directly to the principal of Virtual Learning Academy. The teacher mentor will be responsible for delivering supplemental instruction according to school board approved curriculum standards in the core subject area of science.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate with endorsement in one or more of the following subject areas: DX โ€“ Science, DI โ€“ Integrated Science, or DH โ€“ Earth/Space Science.
  • Experience working with technology; familiar with an online learning environment.
  • Experience or interest working with at-risk youth.
  • Ability to maintain a professional rapport with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • Effective written and verbal communication.
  • Must be available to work 12-month work schedule.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist classroom and caseload students through tutoring and mentoring in online coursework.
  2. Provide targeted tutoring to students working in science courses (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, & Environmental Science).
  3. Assist in the continuing development and alignment of Edgenuity curriculum to state-certified standards.
  4. Facilitate student participation in the use and growth of the VLA garden and greenhouse.
  5. Develop hands-on learning activities in the field of science that supplement online learning instruction.
  6. Maintain student records.
  7. Participate in professional development as directed by the building principal.
  8. Inspire and motivate students to achieve high school credits toward diploma and to find their path to success in life.
