Career Counselor

This position is part of the Ready to Launch Career Counselor program, through the Wayne RESA Workforce Development Initiative. Working in conjunction with each high school counseling staff, the Career Counselor increases career and post-secondary opportunities for students. The Career Counselor will travel to different high schools to meet with students, both individually and in groups, to explore careers and guide them in post-secondary options. The Career Counselor will also attend meetings with government, non-profit and private sector stakeholders to build knowledge and partnerships within the workforce pipeline.


  • Meet with students, both in groups and individually, to provide guidance on careers and post-secondary opportunities
  • Maintain a multi-school weekly rotation schedule to provide career services to students
  • Work with high school counselors and administrators to create effective student contact processes
  • Collaborate with RESA Career Counselor team members to develop best practices
  • Stay current with workforce trends and opportunities, and provide input on workforce contacts
  • Attend meetings with workforce partners to build partnerships within the workforce pipeline.
  • Collect, maintain and report student contact points and outcomes, and maintain department reports
  • Plan, use professional judgment and act effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the direction provided by WRESA’s mission and goals, and department goals and objectives.         
  • Maintains regular in-person attendance
  • Perform other duties as assigned



  • Master’s Degree in Education related field required
  • One of the following credential requirements:
    • School Counselor (NT) endorsement
    • Temporary School Counselor Authorization (TSCA)
    • Preliminary Employment Authorization to Work as a School Counselor (PEASC)
    • School Counselor License (SCL)


  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working with high school students as a secondary school counselor


  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others, including; peers, colleagues and students
  • Proficient in computer usage (including Microsoft Office and Google Docs
  • Demonstrated listening, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated skill working with diverse populations
  • Frequent travel within Wayne County. Limited/infrequent travel outside of Wayne County


Current WCSSF 10-Month Salary Schedule – Schedule H ($64,918 - $98,250 FY) and a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision/life and long-term disability insurance. Membership in the Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System The position is represented by the Wayne County Salaried Staff Federation Local 4479 (WCSSF).
