POSITION SUMMARY:
Plans, organizes, and delivers an instructional program that has already been developed and aligned to state standards.  Feedback is provided by the instructor in an online environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. This position requires daytime work Monday-Friday (8:30 am – 3:30 pm) with students from multiple Michigan schools.  The successful candidate will be required to deliver instruction in specific content areas (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Electives, or World Language) using MVS course materials.  For example, the instructor will be required to provide academic support to approximately 350 students per year enrolled in a variety of courses at varying levels of complexity. Additional 500 hours of time will be devoted to non-instructional duties. This is a twelve-month instructional position.  Full-time instructors will be assigned to work from home but will also be required to attend meetings at the Lansing office on a regular basis ranging from 1-5 days per month.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Plans, prepares, and delivers instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences for all Michigan Virtual School students in certified content area(s)
  2. Plans, develops, and conducts professional development on behalf of the Michigan Virtual School
  3. Serves as the department lead, supporting curriculum and instructional needs of iEducators, Adjunct, and Temporary online instructors
  4. Observes Blackboard courses of instructors within their department, providing continuous improvement feedback (2x per term)
  5. Restores dead links within all courses in their discipline and aligns to core standards
  6. Sounding board for instructor, student, mentor, and parent issues
  7. Provides professional/operational advice and feedback to instructors within their discipline, and across disciplines
  8. Creates instructional supplemental “how to” materials for use with MVS instructors, when applicable
  9. Creates instructional supplemental materials for students
  10. Provides leadership, coaching, and quality control across courses within their discipline
  11. Provides feedback for performance evaluations of Adjunct, Temporary, and Full-Time Instructors
  12. Maintains regular communications with other MVU staff, students, parents, and school personnel during daytime hours
  13. Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences
  14. Collaborates face-to-face, with MVS staff weekly and/or as needed to facilitate communication, monitor and adjust curriculum and instruction based upon student needs and provide MVS appropriate feedback of student progress
  15. Observes and evaluates student performance and development
  16. Assigns and grades class work, homework, tests and assignments
  17. Provides appropriate feedback on student work
  18. Encourages and monitors the progress of individual students
  19. Maintains accurate and complete records of students' progress and development including grading/responding to online discussions, contacting students via e-mail or instant messaging on a regular basis
  20. Posts course announcements to students
  21. Updates all necessary records accurately and completely as required by law and school regulations
  22. Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community
  23. Prepares required reports on student performance and activities
  24. Participates in MVS instructional meetings
  25. Maintains professional expertise with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and makes relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
  26. Participates, at a minimum, in training and presentations including Pre-MACUL, Collaboration of the Minds, and MVU Symposium Events
  27. Development and revisions of onboarding modules for new instructors and iEducator Program
  28. Curriculum planning - Align courses to standards, develop curriculum plans for use with new course development and provide expertise and recommendations on e-texts and other vendors within the course development process
  29. Provide intensive, weekly coaching of iEducators, including specific course feedback
  30. Provides facilitation, coaching, and guidance to iEducators and Adjunct Instructors while working collaboratively with university representatives
  31. Provides feedback for performance evaluations of iEducators
  32. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. All work responsibilities are subject to performance goals and/or targets established as part of the annual performance planning process or as the result of organizational planning.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, & LICENSES (minimum requirements):

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possess and maintain a valid Secondary Teaching Certificate in specific content area with designation of Highly Qualified status
  • High-speed Internet connection at home office

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (minimum requirements):

  • Minimum of three years of successful teaching at the middle or high school level
  • Successful experience as a MVU online instructor

DESIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree or higher preferred (Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Content Specific)
  • Successful experience teaching online and/or in a blended learning environment preferred
